Genesis 28 & 31 – “Then God said to Jacob, ‘Go up to Bethel…’”
There are moments in life when everything around you feels unsettled. Rumors swirl. Jealousy rises. People question your motives, your progress, even your blessings.
Jacob knew that place all too well.
He had served faithfully in Haran, built a family, and seen the hand of God prosper him. Yet now, surrounded by slander and envy, he faces a crossroads. And what does God say?
“Go back to Bethel.”
Not, “Defend yourself.”Not, “Stand your ground.”But, “Return to where you first met Me.”
Bethel means “House of God”. It’s the place where Jacob, weary and running years earlier, had a divine encounter with the Lord, a moment that marked his life forever. And now, in the midst of external pressure and internal weariness, God calls him back to that sacred place.
Back to his spiritual roots.Back to intimacy.Back to purpose.
Sometimes, we get caught up in surviving the season we’re in. Managing the tension, handling the pressure, keeping up appearances. But God isn’t calling us to fight for approval. He’s calling us back to encounter.
Back to the place where His voice was clearer than the opinions.Where His promises felt more real than the problems.Where His presence quieted all the noise.
Bethel isn’t just a location. It’s a posture. It’s where striving ceases, and surrender begins.Where we trade defense for devotion.Where we move from surviving to walking in purpose.
So if you’ve been carrying the weight of slander, jealousy, or confusion, maybe God is whispering the same thing to you today:“Come back to Bethel.”
Not to relive the past, but to remember His faithfulness. To re-establish your intimacy. To be reminded of your calling.
Because before God sends you forward, He often calls you deeper.
Let today be a Bethel moment.
